Yet
another new swimsuit rule
As expected, on June 25, 2009, USA
Swimming issued an update to the June 1, 2009
amendment to their swimsuit rule (Article 102.9.1). Under the June
1 rule, USA Swimming effectively banned those suits not on FINA's approved
swimsuit list. The June 25 update adopts the revised FINA-approved
swimsuit list issued on June 22. The revised list significantly
expands the FINA-approved list issued on May 19, 2009, which defines the FINA-approved brands/models of swimsuits to be worn in
competition. Perhaps the most significant change for our swimmers
in the revised list is that Blue Seventies have been added to the
FINA-approved list. However, it should be noted that the
current list is only valid until December 31, 2009, and it is very
possible that a new list could be issued by FINA shortly after that
date. There is no guarantee that the current B70 suits will be
retained on the list.
For background, here
is the June 1, 2009 amendment to the USA Swimming swimsuit rule:
102.9.1A: Only swimwear approved by FINA, as
reflected on its published list of approved swimwear, may be worn in any
USA Swimming sanctioned or approved competition.
(Existing subsections
A, B, and C of Article 102.9.1 shall be redesignated as subsections B, C
and D, respectively.)
This rule change was put into effect
immediately, and because YMCA Swimming adopted USA Swimming Rules
101 through 105, this USA swimsuit restriction applies to YMCA
swimmers competing in
either USA or in YMCA meets. One important exception to the
rule should be noted: the standard team suits, or any
other "traditional" boys' or girls' suits, are not restricted by this
rule - only the use of special technical suits such as legskins and bodyskins
are restricted to the approved list.

includes the original FINA-approved swimsuit list. Click

read the full text of the update issued on 6-25-09, which contains the
complete revised list of FINA-approved suits. Tigershark swimmers
should see Coach Mike Leonard if they have any questions about this new
rule.
This new rule follows the USA Swimming
rule issued January 19, 2009 which bans
(a) full body suits, and (b) legskin suits, regardless of the manufacturer
or model, for swimmers competing in 12 & under age group events on
or after May 15, 2009.
This rule change also applies to YMCA swimmers, competing in 12 & under
age group events in
either USA or in YMCA meets. Click
